What is the best way to store loose leaf teas?

It is fresh air, oxygen to be specific, that robs the flavor from loose leaf teas. Store the teas in an air tight container away from moisture and direct sunlight. Don’t store teas in the refrigerator or freezer. The cooler temperatures are not helpful: there is moisture, and the delicate leaves will pick up strong odors.

Does your tea have an expiration date?

No, our tea does not have an expiration date. We do put lot numbers on our tea, which lets us know when it was produced. We recommend that the product be consumed within two years of that date, simply to ensure the best flavor. Of course, we guarantee all of our products, and if you are unhappy with a Harney & Sons product, please let us know.

How much caffeine is in green tea?

It is quite difficult to gauge how much caffeine is in a tea, because it depends on so many factors: the tea itself, how much is used in a cup and how long it is brewed. But the general rule is that a cup of green tea contains about 1/3 as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.

What is a tea sachet?

Our tea sachets are pyramid-shaped silky nylon teabags that are filled with whole-leaf loose tea. The benefit of the pyramid shape is that it allows the tea leaves to expand fully, thus allowing the full tea taste to develop. The nylon is food safe and stable in boiling water.

Should tea be kept in the freezer?

No, tea should not be kept in the freezer. There are strong aromas and moisture in your freezer. Tea should be stored in a closed container, out of the light. Remember that tea is a blotter and will absorb strong smells!

Is Harney & Sons English Tea?

Well, if the question is, whether or not our tea is grown in England, the answer is no. Until recently there was no tea grown in England, due to the climate. Now, there is one small garden in Cornwall. However, we do have an English Breakfast Tea, which is 100% Keemun (which was the original English Breakfast blend). Also our teas are used in one of London’s finest hotels: The Dorchester.

What is the difference between herbal tea and decaffeinated tea?

Decaffeinated tea is tea from which the the caffeine has been removed, through one of two possible decaffeination processes. Herbal tea, on the other hand, is not really tea at all, but is herbs brewed in the same way that tea is brewed. Herbals are sometimes referred to as tisanes and never had any caffeine to begin with.

What is an Oolong?

Oolong tea is sometimes referred to as Brown Tea, because it is considered by some to be halfway between a black tea and a green tea. In many respects it is the most complicated tea to make, because the tea is only partially oxidized. That is like keeping a banana perfectly ripe (nature keeps it moving towards being overripe.) However the reward for all that hard work is tea with great body, and the most intense and varied aroma and flavors.

How about Green and Black teas?

All teas originate from the same species, the Camelia Sinensis. To make green tea , the fresh tea is briefly cooked using either steam or dry heat. This process “fixes” the green colors and fresh flavors. For black tea, the tea is left outside and becomes limp (withered), then put into machines that roll the leaves and damage them. The damaged leaves change color to brown, then black. This natural process is called oxidation and is similar to the ripening of a banana (from yellow to brown and finally becoming black.)After that all tea is dried, so that it can be shipped great distances. The oxidation process changes the flavor of the tea (now black) and gives it more body.

Perhaps this is a silly question… but how much tea is in one of the loose teas samples? Like, one cup’s worth, or three? I was trying to figure out sample size vs 5 satchet tin…

    • Brittany

I think it depends on the tea itself how much is in there, though I’m not sure. I haven’t yet used a sample from Harney & Sons other than the sachets.

      • Anon

Thanks anyway. If anyone else wonders, the samples I got looked like about four spoonfuls in the bag (which is about what I brew per mug).

Is puerh tea the only tea to be rinsed before steeping

Hot Cinnamon Spice is my favorite tea. How does the new Hot Cinnamon Sunset differ? Thanks.

    • Rycki

I was wondering the very same thing. In addition there seems to be HT and HRP which I don’t know the difference between either.

(also for @ac885a7940ff6d8b9853c9303f28f9c7:disqus ) I’ve had both, and they don’t differ at all. I remember reading somewhere (though I can’t find the page for the life of me, hah) that they’re the same blend, but one of the names was the original/classic one, and the other one (I think Hot Sinnamon Spice) is the newer name. In everything but name, though, they’re the exact same. Lovely cuppa no matter what it’s called. :)

are all the teas gluten free?

    • jennifer

I’m also hoping to figure this out.

      • beth

I also am wondering whether they are gluten free.

        • HT

All of our teas are gluten-free with one possible exception. The Soba [roasted buckwheat] comes from a supplier that processes gluten products so it may contain small traces.

What is the difference between the blend “Florence” and the regular “Chocolate” black tea?

What makes you hot cinnamon tea so sweet? I am cutting out all sugars and all sweeteners for a two week cleanse. Did you add a sweetener? Is there any calories in the tea? Hot cinnamon is so good – my favorite.

    • HT

The Hot Cinnamon blend does not have any artificial sweeteners. It is made naturally sweet by the cinnamon, orange peel, and sweet cloves.

      • Nancy

It tastes delicious. I see you list natural sweeteners. Are there any artificial flavors & are there any calories? I thought I recall ‘artificial flavor’ being listed on teh box at one time.

  • Jessica

Is the hot cinnamon spice tea gluten free? I love it, but would rather be safe than sorry…

why are artificial flavors included in some of your teas and how can I find out what the artificial flavors are made up of? My husband recently gave me the birthday blend but I’m not sure I want to drink it because it lists artificial flavor as one of the ingredients. Thanks!

  • Jill

I love your hot cinnamon spice tea. Are your teas gluten free?

  • http://www.facebook.com/t.batth Traci Perry

I drink hot cinnamon spice tea and wonder what is meant by “natural and artificial flavors’ stated on the label. I mean, it really bugs me, what exactly is the tea comprised of and are they really necessary for a delicious natural drink like tea? and I wonder if these additives compromise some of the health benefits of the tea.

  • Roxanne

Are you still going to be offering the Hot Cinnamon Sunset tea? This is by far my favorite tea. I have gotten several people to try it and they also love it. Please don’t quite selling it. I received the hot cinnamon spice tea for a gift and it does not compare. I would love to purchase more of Hot Cinnamon Sunset how can I do this?

I have a friend who had bariatric surgery and is very sensitive to sugars. i’d like to buy her Valentines blend or Soho blend because they have a chocolate flavor but didn’t know if they have sugar in them. Can you provide some information?

  • LisaB

Do you add any artificial colors/dyes to your herbal teas? They are delicious and colorful. I am allergic to some food dyes, so I need to ask. I have tried some samples. I don’t think you can create those colors with dyes and they don’t leave my tongue stained like something with dye but thought I better ask! Thanks.

  • Terry

You state that tea is decafed with one of two methods. Do those methods involve Methylene Chloride or other carcinogens? How safe are your decaf products?
