Henry Hudson sailed into New York Bay in 1609, northward up what would become the Hudson River. He traded with the native people living along the riverbanks and navigated as far north as present-day Albany. Hudson's voyage four hundred years ago opened his namesake river and valley to agriculture, commerce and 20th Century environmental pollution.
Since 1963, Scenic Hudson has led the crusade to protect and restore the Hudson River Valley. With more than 25,000 impassioned supporters, Scenic Hudson is the largest environmental group focused on works to protect and restore the Hudson River and its majestic landscape as an irreplaceable National treasure.
Scenic Hudson is credited with saving New York's fabled Storm King Mountain from a destructive industrial project that would have altered the view, contour and wildlife habitat of this majestic mountain. Storm King Mountain was the subject of noted 19th century Hudson River School landscape painters. Storm King was Scenic Hudson's first vigorous cause and launched the modern grass-roots environmental movement. Scenic Hudson has preserved more than 100 natural areas encompassing 25,000 acres (one-and-a-half times the size of Manhattan) and created or enhanced 40 parks.
Scenic Hudson recently became one of the first
land trusts to be awarded accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation
Commission. For land preservation organizations, this is THE gold seal of
professionalism. To learn more about the mission of Scenic Hudson visit:
