Harney & Sons Tea Company sells fine teas at a price
that makes tea an everyday luxury. Our tea is sipped around the world in homes,
hotels, restaurants, cafes and on cruise ships. The process of shipping tea from
the world’s tea gardens to Harney & Sons’ production facility for blending,
bagging and packing, then on to the world’s teacups, impacts our increasingly
fragile environment. What could we do to give back to the environment that grows
the tea of the world?
In 2006, Michael and Paul Harney decided membership in 1% For The Planet would provide Harney & Sons with the opportunity to
drive positive environmental change in our geographical region. Our production
facility is located in Upstate New York surrounded by the beautiful mountains
that make up the Berkshire Range. We are minutes from the Appalachian Trail.
Our facility is located between the Hudson River to our west and the
Housatonic River to our east. The Housatonic offers some of this country’s
finest fly-fishing. Joining 1% for The Planet meant we could directly donate
one percent of our total sales to the environmental organizations of our
choice. We also pay annual membership dues to 1% For The Planet to help this
exemplary organization defray its overhead costs. We encourage our business associates to visit their website: www.onepercentfortheplanet.org
for more information.
The Harney family and staff are very proud to be part of this fine global organization working toward protection of the environment 1% at a time. As of this year Harney & Sons (with your help) will have donated over half a
million dollars to 1% for the Planet. Through 1% for the Planet, we support the following non-profits:

Henry Hudson sailed into New York Bay in 1609, northward up what would become the Hudson River. He traded with the native people living along the riverbanks and navigated as far north as present-day Albany. Hudson’s voyage four hundred years ago opened his namesake river and valley to agriculture, commerce and 20th Century environmental pollution.
Since 1963, Scenic Hudson has led the crusade to protect and restore the Hudson River Valley. With more than 25,000 impassioned supporters, Scenic Hudson is the largest environmental group focused on works to protect and restore the Hudson River and its majestic landscape as an irreplaceable National treasure.
Scenic Hudson is credited with saving New York’s fabled Storm King Mountain from a destructive industrial project that would have altered the view, contour and wildlife habitat of this majestic mountain. Storm King Mountain was the subject of noted 19th century Hudson River School landscape painters. Storm King was Scenic Hudson’s first vigorous cause and launched the modern grass-roots environmental movement. Scenic Hudson has preserved more than 100 natural areas encompassing 25,000 acres (one-and-a-half times the size of Manhattan) and created or enhanced 40 parks.
Scenic Hudson recently became one of the first
land trusts to be awarded accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation
Commission. For land preservation organizations, this is THE gold seal of
professionalism. To learn more about the mission of Scenic Hudson visit:
