Mike's Tea Ratings

Briskness Body Aroma

Our Review
This tea is made in northern Taiwan and is twisted (as opposed to the balled style.) It is done around June, later than other oolongs. The growers allow a leaf hopper (Jacobiasca formosana) to attack the tea leaves. The plants release a compound in self-defense that we find deliciously similar in flavor to peaches.
Dry Leaves Light brown and green leaves.
Liquor Copper.
Aroma A wonderful aroma with notes of tropical fruits like guava, and stone fruits like peaches.
Caffeine Level Caffeinated
Body This can be quite a light bodied oolong.
Flavors Subtle flavors of spring honey, fresh white peaches, and buttered toast.
Brewing Time 4 to 5 minutes
Brewing Temperature 205° F

Fanciest Formosa Oolong

This is another great oolong. The plant protects itself from attack by creating a compound that has a great peachy aroma, maybe better than any other oolong. It is absolutely delicious. Mike saw the plants on the defensive on his last trip, and it was fascinating for a teaman.

The best! ...not like any other Oolong
Average Review:

My husband and I have compared this Oolong with several other Oolongs, both at Harney and Sons and with other companies. First of all, the Harney teas are superior to other companies. Other non-Harney oolongs are fishy or bitter in comparison. We've tried several Harney oolongs as well, which are nice teas, but just do not compare at all to the Fanciest Formosa. Even the 'regular' Formosa is flat compared to Fanciest. There are many 'layers' in the Fanciest... florals, fruits, almost like memories of where the tea grew up! :) It really is that good. We're ruined now, as we just can't drink anything inferior to Fanciest Formosa Oolong. (If you don't believe me, just get the sample of a few oolongs and compare for yourself. You'll see what I mean.) Another bonus with Fanciest is that it does NOT even get bitter or ruined if you forget to remove your tea in time. I often get busy and end up with a 15 minute steep, which would ruin any other tea's taste. NOT so for Fanciest Formosa! It is still delicious, fruity/floral, and not bitter. This is simply the best oolong I've ever had (after about 20 years of drinking oolongs). THANK YOU for this tea, Harney and Sons!

Fanciest Formosa Oolong More Depth in Character
Average Review:

I did a side by side test of Fanciest Formosa Oolong and the regular Formosa Oolong . The former is richer and deeper in character. I disagree with the previous reviews, and champion the Fanciest Formosa Oolong.

An overpriced, overhyped Oolong
Average Review:

I would have to agree with the majority of the reviewers here and say that you'll do just as well with the standard Formosa Oolong. Not much of a taste difference and certainly not worth the higher price. I'm going back to the standard Formosa.
