One of the contradictions of Darjeelings is that Risheehat lies below the city of Darjeeling, yet it sits high upon its own mountain with some of the steepest tea fields to be found. Jayshree Tea has managed this estate for years. They also do some of our favorite Assams, this year we are featuring: Mangalam, and Nahorabi. This Second Flush Darjeeling is made in June, and has the elusive muscatel flavors that taste similar to juicy muscatel grapes. Most teas are an interplay of mankind and nature to make tea, plants and people if you prefer. This one includes pests with the people and plants. The leaves are allowed to get infested with a particular pest that creates a reaction by the tea plant to defend itself. And that defensive chemical tastes just like juicy muscatel grapes. If you prefer not to think about all of this, and just enjoy one of the best tasting black teas, please do so. Of course we do not include any of those pesky bugs.
Medium sized twisted dark brown leaves. There is the occasional lighter tip.
Medium brown clear liquor.
We were pleased to find lovely yet elusive muscatel (dark grapey) aromas.
