About twenty years ago, this special cultivar was found in the northern Zhejiang Province, and it has been a big hit ever since. People, including teamen, wax enthusiastically about the great combination of flavors, sweetness, and body.
Mike visited Anji on his recent trip to China. While enjoying some lovely green tea, he also had some black tea made at the same tea factory. It was delicious and brought some back for your ( and his) enjoyment. It is a stellar blend of a mouth filling, tongue coating , and honey flavors. We think you will love it.
Dry leaf: The aroma was so fresh and bright!
Scent cup: pure holiday sweet potato with brown sugar, honey, and a bare touch of cinnamon.
Liquor: pale for a black tea but don't let that fool you. The tea is full of flavor, sweet and smooth. Paired with sweets, the first sip after tasting my Godiva Strawberry Truffle bar was amazing. Pairing with sweets and tidbits is a big plus here as we have frequent tea gatherings. Essence of sweet potato casserole! If Golden Monkey is a powerful and benevolent matriarch, this tea is the young princess she started out as! (Posted on 7/26/15)
I was shocked to see 'Tea P's' one star review bring this amazing tea's overall rating down. I too like Assams, but not as much as Chinese black teas and this is one of the best I've ever had.
I would say that this is by far Harney's best black tea of the current stock. It can take a bit of finessing to pull out the sweetness. I find shorter brew times (~2:45-3:00) with 4 grams per eight ounces (8 oz.) of water right off the boil yields amazing results. A spectacular tea. Too bad only 1 pound lots are available. This is one of the best discoveries that our friends at H&S have come up with yet. The aroma and flavor are sublime. The second steep is just as full-bodied as the first, so even though it's in the higher price range it is good value. It has replaced Keemun Mao Feng as my Sunday tea (KMF is now a weekday tea for me). I like to have a truly special tea on Sunday mornings, when I like to lounge around the house, take it easy, drink a fine pot or two, and read the Sunday paper. This tea is the perfect choice for whatever your version of a special morning is. (Posted on 10/4/13)
