Japanese Sencha

We call this Japanese Sencha because not all Sencha sold is from Japan. This is a nice blend of teas from the central Shizuoka province, and it is a very pleasant everyday tea. In fact our Founder, John Harney, starts everyday with this green tea.

About Japanese Sencha

Dry Leaves The leaves from this tea are a medium lime green color. Since this is a traditional sencha (futsumushi) the leaves are more identifiable than in the deep steamed (fukamushi).
Liquor The liquor is a medium green, not as intense as the Ichiban. The green is a truer green than the Bancha, which tends more towards yellow.
Aroma Our Japanese Sencha has pleasant spinachy notes, with slight roast flavors that are similar to toasted bread.
Caffeine Level Caffeinated
Body As a mid-season Sencha, this green tea has good levels of amino acids and more body than most green teas.
Flavors This is a very pleasant green tea. The mild vegetal flavors with light accents of citrus and toast make this a tea that can handle all your moods - every day.
Brewing Time 1 to 2 minutes
Brewing Temperature 160° F
Our Review
The Kaburagi family has sold to Americans for over 110 years. They are well known in Tokyo and throughout Japan as a pre-eminent supplier of tea. They supply this pleasant Sencha from central Shizuoka. To keep the price somewhat reasonable, we choose teas from the middle of the season. John Harney has drunk this tea everyday for over 10 years. He values the pleasant flavor and the antioxidants.

Great Tasting Tea
Average Review:

This an awesome tasting tea that holds up to 5-6 steeps when brewed per time and temp listed on the website. I will be a hard choice to make every morning. This tea, or my favorite oolong tea.

I like this one, and I found brewing it with 90 degree C water for 30-40sec is even more tasty than 1-2 minutes & 160°F..

A Pleasant Surprise
Average Review:

I received a sample sachet of Japanese Sencha with my first ever Harney&Sons tea order and I decided to give it a try. As soon as I opened the packet, I could tell from the aroma that it was green tea of another quality. My family's straight from Hong Kong and we drink green tea like it's water. I thought the loose Japanese teas we bought from H-mart were the best green tea I was going to get here in the States, but this one is fantastic. The smell is lovely, truly characteristic of a Japanese green tea, and the colour is pretty. I'm only a poor university student, but after this sencha, how can I go back to the inexpensive teas from before? Harney&Sons already has my confidence~

Pretty Awesome!

I was sent a sample packet with my order and decided to taste it. The tea is quite lovely. I would say it the perfect mix of bitter/harshness with great (quality) taste. You can definitely tell that this tea is wonderful after one sip!

Try as I Might
Average Review:

I tried this tea after a sample was sent with my order. Try as I might, I just can't seem to get into green teas. I guess that vegetal flavor is just a bit too much for me. I normally like herbals and flavored teas if this helps you determine whether this tea is right for you.

Absolute Favorite
Average Review:

I've only been drinking Japanese sencha for a little over a year after giving it a try at a day spa in Maui. I'm glad that I've come across it. I've tried several green teas, from matcha to hojicha but by far sencha is my favorite. This particular one has a subtle and pleasant taste, even if you over brew, unlike other green teas. It's a keeper in the tea pantry. It's so good that I don't know if I should just keep it to myself or share it.
