When summer hits its stride, one drink always takes center stage: iced tea. It’s crisp, refreshing, and endlessly versatile. Iced tea is more than just a way to beat the heat. Iced tea is summer, poured over clinking ice, enjoyed on porches, packed for picnics, and passed around at backyard gatherings. In this edition of Mike Harney Spills the Tea, I’m reminiscing on the simple joys of summertime sipping and sharing how our love for iced tea has grown over the years.
How did your family spend summers growing up?
Most summers, we worked at the White Hart Inn in Salisbury, Connecticut, otherwise known as the birthplace of Harney & Sons. We took on a variety of odd jobs, from helping out in the restaurant kitchen to tackling projects like painting buildings. It was work, but it was still fun. After 1970, we would help Stanley Mason, my dad’s tea-making mentor, pack loose tea. After a hot day of working, we would squeeze in a strawberry milkshake at the local ice cream bar.
What is your favorite memory from those summer days by the lake?
Our dear mother had us on the swim team, so we had training most mornings and then would hang out at the local beach, called The Grove.
What role did iced tea play in your family’s summer traditions growing up?
Our family was not involved in the tea business until after 1970. When we were kids, we didn’t actually drink much iced tea. Plus, Stanley Mason was a traditional English tea man, so he would not allow iced tea.
What do you think makes a great iced tea?
I like tea and ice. Keep it simple!
Which Harney & Sons iced teas are your personal go-tos during the summer?
I’m a big fan of our Peach Fresh Brew Iced Tea. Although our Passion Fruit Fresh Brew Iced Tea blend is a close second.
How has the iced tea line evolved over the years?
Iced tea first gained popularity in the South, and Southerners typically preferred their iced tea sweet. Therefore, reducing or eliminating sugar has been a positive change for us. Additionally, adding flavors has made it more popular.
Are there any flavors that people often overlook but are worth trying over ice?
Brigitte likes to drink Risheehat 1st Flush Darjeeling over ice. Verveine (Lemon Verbena) is another good caffeine-free option that can handle ice.
Are there any new iced tea flavors or bottled teas you’re excited about this year?
White Peach Matcha Iced Tea is one that checks many boxes. If you like Matcha and like Peach, it’s a must-try.
How do you hope people feel when they enjoy Harney & Sons iced teas in the summertime?
Summers are much hotter now than they were during my youth. That means iced tea has become a necessity. Always have some ready to brew so you can share a pitcher with loved ones and stay cool!
