How To Make Matcha Tea

Unlike most teas, matcha has to be shaken or whisked to make a frothy cup. Traditionally matcha is made with a bamboo matcha whisk and bowl, but a small kitchen whisk or a milk frother can also be used. Check out our video on how to make matcha.

To make a cup of matcha:

  • Add 1-2 teaspoons of matcha to your bowl or cup
  • Add a little cool water and mix into a paste
  • Add about half a cup of warm water, no hotter than 170 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Whisk vigorously until the tea is frothy
  • Add remaining water to desired cup size

How Is Matcha Tea Different?

Matcha tea is a powdered green tea that is shade grown near Kyoto, Japan. Once leaves are harvested, they are air dried and ground between two stones. The result is an ultra fine powder that can be sweet and vegetal in flavor.

Unlike other teas, with a cup of matcha you are drinking the leaf! Many believe there are benefits to drinking matcha tea because you are consuming 100% of the leaf and all its nutrients. It is a great cup of tea on its own or added to smoothies and baked goods.

Caffeine in Matcha Tea

Being a green tea, matcha does contain caffeine and in higher levels than other green teas. Because the entire leaf is used, matcha tea can contain nearly as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. However, caffeine release is believed to be slower because you are drinking the entire leaf. This slower release of caffeine reduces “caffeine jitters” that coffee or other teas can cause.
