In the Harney family, tea is more than a daily ritual—it’s a thread that ties generations together. This Mother’s Day, we’re sharing a special reflection from two women who have experienced the many seasons of motherhood. My mom, Brigitte Harney, and my aunt, Elyse Harney Morris, have each played a special role in the Harney & Sons story. Through it all, tea has been a quiet, constant presence in their lives.

From pregnancy to sleepless nights with a newborn to the whirlwind of toddlerhood, I was curious how tea found its place in their everyday routines. So, I sat down with both of them to ask the questions every mom wants answers to. Pour yourself a cup and join us as we explore their journeys through motherhood, one sip at a time.

What role has tea played in your life as a mother?

Brigitte: It was a way to start the day and keep me on my toes for when the boys got up. When I drank tea in the afternoon, it was more to relax.

Elyse Jr: Tea is an integral part of our daily lives, fostering connections and storytelling among friends and family. During our three years in Hawaii, I developed a fondness for Harney Iced Tea, especially the Peach and Blood Orange herbal varieties.

What role has tea played in your own mother/daughter relationships?

Brigitte: Drinking tea was a time to catch up with my mother, usually after school. She had spent some time in England and always made a pot of Lapsang Souchong in the afternoon. We would have our goûter (afternoon snack) with tea and talk about our days.

Elyse Jr: My daughter and I have always cherished our morning ritual of enjoying Wedding Tea. Every night for bedtime tea, we brew up Yellow & Blue

Were there specific teas that helped during different life stages?

Brigitte: During my pregnancies, I usually drank herbal infusions like Lemon Verbena and our delicious Raspberry Tea. Many herbal teas offer gentle relief for common pregnancy discomforts like nausea, bloating, and trouble sleeping*. Plus, they can help you stay hydrated in a more flavorful way.

How have your tea choices changed over the years?

Brigitte: My tea choices have definitely changed over the years. I am now more fond of certain teas like First Flush Darjeeling, Gyokuro, White Teas, and Pu-erhs

Elyse Jr: While my tea preferences remain consistent, I savor various types in the morning and herbal teas in the afternoon. My special treat is Dragon Pearl Jasmine at 4:00 p.m., which I enjoy with my mother while admiring the artful unfurling of the tea leaves. These are some of my very favorite memories – just being with my mom and catching up on our day, sharing a laugh or a cry with my best friend!

Are there any special memories tied to sharing tea with your children or other mothers in your life?

Elyse Jr: We have created countless memories through tea parties with our children and their stuffed animals, often featuring Raspberry Herbal Tea. My daughter even hosted an adult tea party for her 30th birthday, incorporating tea and bourbon, reminiscent of a drink served at Cait and Alex's wedding.

Did you find yourself using tea as a way to gather and connect with other mothers?

Elyse Jr: I have converted so many friends to Harney Teas, and everyone has their favorite. Linda loves Blueberry Green, while Robyn prefers the Green Tea with Coconut, Ginger, and Vanilla. Like most Harney fans, Demi is a fan of the Hot Cinnamon Spice. The silken sachets make tea a luxury. Not to mention, it brings a smile to your face and provides a level of connection.

Whether you’re a mother, a daughter, a sister, a niece, or a cousin, we invite you to share the tea that guided you through life. And be sure to share your favorite blends with your loved ones so you can be properly spoiled this Mother’s Day!
