Description

Hot Cinnamon Spice is a black tea blended with three types of cinnamon, orange peel, and sweet cloves. John Harney, our founder, created it in our beginning years, and it has been the tea most people discover us through ever since. It is bold and warming, with a sweet-spicy character that tastes sweet even though there is no added sugar or sweeteners anywhere in it. The sweetness comes from the spices themselves.

It holds up beautifully to a splash of milk, and it is just as good over ice. For a lot of people, it is the tea they keep in the cupboard year round.

Details: This is one of our oldest flavored tea blends. John Harney developed it in the early 1980s. Over the decades, its popularity has only grown, and now it is our most popular tea. People love its combination of strong spices and sweetness. And since there are no sugars (we tested it), it is safe for everyone to enjoy.
Dry Leaves: Chinese black tea is the base of this tea, so the leaves are dark brown. There are pieces of cinnamon bark and orange peel covered with cinnamon dust.
Liquor: The liquor of this tea is medium brown with orange hues.
Aroma: This tea has a very strong aroma of spices and citrus.
Flavors: Wow! This tea is one of our most flavorful (and popular) teas, combining orange with natural cinnamon, natural and artificial cinnamon flavors, and cloves.
 Caffeine Level: Caffeinated
Body: Medium-bodied. This tea fills your mouth with a melange of spices.
 Brewing Time: 5 minutes
 Brewing Temp: 212º

Four Decades of Tradition

In 1983, John Harney set out to make tea an everyday luxury, hand-blending his first teas in the basement of his country inn in Salisbury, Connecticut.
Three generations later, we still follow his one rule: only buy and blend teas that make us smile. Today we blend more than 300 of them from a home base in Millerton, New York, where the third generation is adding blends of its own.

The Tea Customers Come Back For

Hot Cinnamon Spice is one of our defining blends. John Harney blended it in the company's early years from three kinds of cinnamon, orange peel, and sweet cloves, with no added sugar anywhere in it. It tastes sweet because the spices are doing the talking. Decades later it is still the tea most people discover us through, and still the one we are asked about most.

How to Enjoy It

A great cup of tea is a simple thing to make, but it's the small details that make it worth it. Good water, a proper boil, a few minutes of patience. None of it takes much, and together they turn an everyday cup into something you look forward to.

Water

Start with fresh spring or filtered water. It's nearly everything in the cup, and even a tea this bold takes on whatever's in the tap.

Hot

With its black tea base, you'll want to use boiling water (212ºF). Steep 5 minutes so the cinnamon, orange, and cloves have time to come forward.

  • 1 sachet per 12 oz mug
  • 1 teabag per 8 oz cup
  • 1 teaspoon loose (2.5 g) per 8 oz cup

Iced

Brew it double strength, twice the tea for the same water, then pour straight over a tall glass of ice. It holds its spice as it dilutes instead of washing out.

Common questions

What does Hot Cinnamon Spice taste like?

It is bold and warming, with a sweet-spicy character that comes from three types of cinnamon layered with orange peel and sweet cloves over a black tea base. The result is fuller and rounder than a single-cinnamon black tea.

Is Hot Cinnamon Spice sweet, and does it have sugar?

It tastes naturally sweet, but there is no added sugar and no sweeteners in it. The sweetness comes from the sweet cloves and orange peel, so you can enjoy the flavor without anything added.

Is Hot Cinnamon Spice good with milk?

Yes. The bold black tea base and warming spice hold up well to a splash of milk, and many people enjoy it that way. It is naturally sweet, so taste it before reaching for any sugar.

How much caffeine is in Hot Cinnamon Spice?

As a black tea, it has about 40-60 mg of caffeine per cup, a moderate amount. If you want the same flavor without the caffeine, our Decaf Hot Cinnamon and Herbal Hot Cinnamon Spice are both caffeine-free.

Is there a caffeine-free or green tea version of Hot Cinnamon Spice?

Yes, we make three siblings. Decaf Hot Cinnamon is a caffeine-free black tea, Herbal Hot Cinnamon Spice is a caffeine-free herbal blend, and Green Hot Cinnamon Spice uses a green tea base.

Should I buy Hot Cinnamon Spice as loose leaf, sachets, or teabags?

It comes in loose leaf, sachets, and wrapped teabags, so it is really about your routine. Loose leaf suits a pot and a strainer, while sachets and wrapped teabags are easy for a single cup or travel.

How do I brew Hot Cinnamon Spice?

Bring your water to a full boil at 212F and steep for 5 minutes. See the How to Enjoy section on this page for more detail.
