Description

Earl Grey Supreme is a refined, full-leaf Earl Grey, a black tea blend finished with natural Oil of Bergamot from Calabria, Italy. Where a classic Earl Grey is all black tea and bergamot, the Supreme adds traditional oolong, white tea silver tips for a natural sweetness, over a base of Assam, Keemun, and Ceylon. The result is lighter, softer, and more aromatic, with more bergamot and a pleasant finish.

Bright with citrus, it is easy to drink plain or with a splash of milk. Most people who try the Supreme do not go back to an ordinary Earl Grey.

Details: Great teas and wonderful lemony flavors combine into something special, something we call Earl Grey Supreme. People love
Dry Leaves: A nice mixture of large black leaves, brown leaves of the oolong, and silver tips of the white tea.
Liquor: The liquor is a lighter brown than most Earl Greys. This is because of the higher proportion of large tippy teas and the silver tips.
Aroma: Lovely citrus aromas predominate. We put a higher amount of bergamot in this special tea.
Flavors: The lemony flavors are perfectly balanced with the delicious tea base. In comparison to other Earl Greys, there is a nice sweetness from the tippy teas and citrusy bergamot.
 Caffeine Level: Caffeinated
Body: Light-bodied. With larger, tippy teas and silver tips, this is a lighter-bodied tea.
 Brewing Time: 5 minutes
 Brewing Temp: 212º

Most Earl Grey's use the citrus to dress up a plain black base. I wanted a base worth drinking on its own, so we created this one with a delicious black tea base.

Four Decades of Tradition

In 1983, John Harney set out to make tea an everyday luxury, hand-blending his first teas in the basement of his country inn in Salisbury, Connecticut.
Three generations later, we still follow his one rule: only buy and blend teas that make us smile. Today we blend more than 300 of them from a home base in Millerton, New York, where the third generation is adding blends of its own.

Five Origins, One Bergamot

Earl Grey Supreme is a Harney blend, assembled from leaf we gather across the tea world. Full-leaf Assam from India and Keemun from China give it body, Ceylon Orange Pekoe from Sri Lanka adds brightness, traditional Formosa Oolong from Taiwan lightens the cup and Chinese Silver Needle tips lend the natural sweetness and silvery leaf that set the Supreme apart. We finish by blending in natural Oil of Bergamot from Calabria, Italy, the defining note of Earl Grey's for over two centuries.

How to Enjoy It

Earl Grey Supreme is nuanced where most Earl Greys are bold, and all the better for it. Here is how to make it best.

Water

Start with fresh spring or filtered water. It's nearly everything in the cup, and even a tea this bold takes on whatever's in the tap.

Hot

With its black tea base, you'll want to use boiling water (212ºF). Steep 5 minutes so the bergamot and citrus have room to come forward.

  • 1 sachet per 12 oz mug
  • 1 teabag per 8 oz cup
  • 1 teaspoon loose (2.5 g) per 8 oz cup

Iced

Brew it double strength, twice the tea for the same water, then pour straight over a tall glass of ice. The bergamot stays bright as it dilutes instead of washing out.

Common questions

What does Earl Grey Supreme taste like?

Bright bergamot and citrus over a sweet, tippy black base of Assam, Keemun, and Ceylon. Formosa Oolong and Silver Needle white-tea tips make it lighter and softer than a standard Earl Grey.

How is Earl Grey Supreme different from regular Earl Grey?

The oolong and silver white-tea tips lighten the body and add natural sweetness, so it drinks smoother and more aromatic than our regular Earl Grey. It also carries more bergamot, using natural Oil of Bergamot from Calabria, Italy.

Is Earl Grey Supreme good with milk and sugar?

Yes. It takes a splash of milk nicely, though its lighter body and natural sweetness from the white-tea tips mean it needs less sugar than many Earl Greys. Try it plain first to catch the bergamot and citrus.

How much caffeine is in Earl Grey Supreme?

About 40 to 60 mg per cup, a moderate amount, since it is a black tea. The oolong and white-tea tips in the blend keep it on the lighter side.

How do I brew Earl Grey Supreme?

Bring fresh water to a full boil at 212F and steep for 5 minutes. That gives you the full bergamot aroma and a rounded, sweet cup.

Loose leaf or sachets, which should I choose?

We offer both. Loose leaf lets you see the full-leaf blend and tippy white-tea buds, while sachets are the easy choice for the office or travel. Both use the same blend.

Is there a decaf version of Earl Grey Supreme?

Not of the Supreme itself, but if you want a caffeine-free bergamot cup, our Decaf Earl Grey is a good option. It is the decaf of our regular Earl Grey rather than the Supreme blend.
