1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet was started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (founder of Blue Ribbon Flies) to inspire businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual membership and everyday actions. Both successful entrepreneurs, they recognized the power of collective action to protect the environment and work with individuals and business members to identify environmental organizations that will make the greatest impact and align with a business’ giving goals.

To improve our global footprint, Harney & Sons joined the 1% for The Planet movement in 2006 to directly donate one percent of our total sales to the environmental organizations of our choice. We also pay annual membership dues to 1% For The Planet to help this exemplary organization defray its overhead costs. As of this year, Harney & Sons (with your help) has donated 3.85 million dollars to 1% for the Planet.

Jane Lloyd Fund & The National Breast Cancer Foundation

The Jane Lloyd Fund was born after Jane Lloyd’s death in 2005 to help families in the Region One area of the Northwest Corner of Connecticut, who, because of the effects of cancer and its treatment, cannot meet their day-to-day financial obligations. The National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor, Janelle Hail, and provides mammograms, education, and research about breast cancer nationwide.

It is in Jane Lloyd’s memory, a lifelong friend and gardener, that Jane's Garden Tea, a green tea with pomegranate and roses, was blended to show support during her fight against breast cancer. One dollar of the proceeds from the sale of each Jane's Garden tin is shared by the Jane Lloyd Fund and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

St. George’s Society of New York

We created the Special English Breakfast tea, a strong blend of black teas from Sri Lanka, India, and Kenya, in association with St. George’s Society of New York. The Society has assisted people of British and Commonwealth heritage living in the New York area since 1770. A portion of the proceeds from each purchase of the Special English Breakfast tea supports the Society’s beneficiary program, which provides financial assistance to elderly and disabled people, and a scholarship program, which provides university tuition for academically outstanding students.

The GMHC

Our Love Life tea is a refreshing blend of Japanese Bancha green tea with fresh flavors of strawberry, coconut, rich vanilla, and puffed rice for a light, fruity brew. 50% of the sales from this tea benefits the GMHC, which is the world’s first and leading provider of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and advocacy. Building on decades of dedication and expertise, the GMHC understands the reality of HIV/AIDS and is fighting to end the AIDS epidemic while uplifting the lives of those affected.

Humanity Initiative

Named for the ethical principle of not causing harm to other living things, Ahimsa is an aspiring tea with a mission: create a revolution of peace and kindness so compelling, pervasive, and enduring that it ends humankind's tragic habit of trying to solve our crises with war. Made with organic rooibos, cinnamon, and hibiscus, 50% of each purchase of this invigorating tea goes towards The Humanity Initiative. We invite you to learn more and help make peace on earth.
