Harney Charity Partners: Buy Tea, Give Back

As Earth Day approaches, it’s hard not to think about this celestial body we call home and ask ourselves, “What am I doing to better our planet and the people living on it?” At Harney & Sons, protecting the earth and its inhabitants is a top priority. That’s why we give a portion of our sales to foundations like 1% for the Planet, The GMHC, and The National Breast Cancer Foundation. Read on to learn how each Harney & Sons purchase you make is impacting lives around the world.

1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet was started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (founder of Blue Ribbon Flies) to inspire businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual membership and everyday actions. Both successful entrepreneurs, they recognized the power of collective action to protect the environment and work with individuals and business members to identify environmental organizations that will make the greatest impact and align with a business’ giving goals.

To improve ourglobal footprint, Harney & Sons joined the 1% for The Planet movement in 2006 to directly donate one percent of our total sales to the environmental organizations of our choice. We also pay annual membership dues to 1% For The Planet to help this exemplary organization defray its overhead costs. As of this year, Harney & Sons (with your help) has donated 3.85 million dollars to 1% for the Planet.

Jane Lloyd Fund & The National Breast Cancer Foundation

TheJane Lloyd Fund was born after Jane Lloyd’s death in 2005 to help families in the Region One area of the Northwest Corner of Connecticut, who, because of the effects of cancer and its treatment, cannot meet their day-to-day financial obligations. TheNational Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor, Janelle Hail, and provides mammograms, education, and research about breast cancer nationwide.

It is in Jane Lloyd’s memory, a lifelong friend and gardener, thatJane's Garden Tea, a green tea with pomegranate and roses, was blended to show support during her fight against breast cancer. One dollar of the proceeds from the sale of each Jane's Garden tin is shared by the Jane Lloyd Fund and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
