Description

Harney & Sons Earl Grey is a black tea from India and China, scented with natural oil of bergamot from Italy. It is the classic version of the cup, brisk and traditional, with a little oolong blended in to lighten it.

Medium in body, its bergamot is gentler than our Supreme, so the black tea still leads. Drink it on its own, or with milk and sugar the way many people first came to it.

Details: Would the world still turn without Earl Grey tea? Many would doubt it. Originally just for the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Charles Grey, later it was spread throughout the kingdom and then around the world. It is so popular that we offer over ten versions of it.
Dry Leaves: A mixture of black and brown leaves (from the Formosa Oolong).
Liquor: The liquor is a clear brown, tending toward russet.
Aroma: The lemony aroma of bergamot from Italy comes through clearly. In this version, the notes are not quite as strong as in the Supreme or Imperial versions.
Flavors: In the later decades of the British Empire, citrus flavors became synonymous with Earl Grey tea. This tea is true to that heritage. It can be enjoyed on its own or with milk and sugar.
 Caffeine Level: Caffeinated
Body: Medium-bodied, lightened by the addition of oolong tea.
Brewing Time: 4 to 5 minutes
 Brewing Temp: 212º

Briskness

Earl Grey is one of the teas that made flavored blends part of the English table, and we wanted ours to be the honest, traditional cup. We keep the bergamot gentle so the black tea from India and China still comes through, brisk and full the way an Earl Grey should be.

Four Decades of Tradition

In 1983, John Harney set out to make tea an everyday luxury, hand-blending his first teas in the basement of his country inn in Salisbury, Connecticut.
Three generations later, we still follow his one rule: only buy and blend teas that make us smile. Today we blend more than 300 of them from a home base in Millerton, New York, where the third generation is adding blends of its own.

Where the Classic Begins

Earl Grey is a Harney take on one of the oldest flavored teas in the English tradition, named for Charles, the second Earl Grey. We build ours on a medium-bodied black tea base from several countries then blend in a little oolong to lighten it before we finish it with natural oil of bergamot from Calabria, Italy. The Harney family invites you to explore the whole family of Earl Greys, and this is where it starts.

How to Enjoy It

Earl Grey is the classic, brisker than our Supreme and all the more traditional for it. Here is how we make it when we want it at its best.

Water

Start with fresh spring or filtered water. It's nearly everything in the cup, and even a tea this bold takes on whatever's in the tap.

Hot

With its black tea base, you'll want to use boiling water (212ºF). Steep 5 minutes so the bergamot and citrus have room to come forward.

  • 1 sachet per 12 oz mug
  • 1 teabag per 8 oz cup
  • 1 teaspoon loose (2.5 g) per 8 oz cup

Iced

Brew it double strength, twice the tea for the same water, then pour straight over a tall glass of ice. The bergamot stays clear as it dilutes instead of fading out.

Common questions

What does Earl Grey taste like?

Our classic Earl Grey is a brisk black tea blended from India and China leaf, lifted with natural oil of bergamot. Expect a full, traditional black tea cup with a bright, citrusy, slightly floral note from the bergamot.

Is Earl Grey good with milk and sugar?

Yes. The brisk black tea base stands up well to a splash of milk, and a little sugar rounds out the citrusy bergamot. It is just as good taken plain if you prefer to keep the bergamot forward.

How much caffeine is in Earl Grey?

As a black tea, it has about 40 to 60 mg of caffeine per cup, a moderate amount. If you would rather skip the caffeine, we also make a Decaf Earl Grey.

What is the difference between Earl Grey and Earl Grey Supreme?

Our classic Earl Grey is the brisker, more traditional cup, all black tea and bergamot. Earl Grey Supreme adds oolong and silver tips along with more bergamot, for a lighter, sweeter, and more aromatic version of the same idea.

Is there a decaf version of Earl Grey?

Yes. Decaf Earl Grey gives you the same brisk black tea and bergamot character without the caffeine, so you can enjoy it any time of day.

Should I buy loose leaf or sachets?

We offer Earl Grey in loose leaf and sachets. Loose leaf is our pick when you want the fullest flavor and are brewing by the pot, while sachets are the easy, tidy choice for a single cup or on the go.

How do I brew Earl Grey?

Bring fresh water to a full boil at 212F and steep for 5 minutes. See the How to Enjoy section on this page for more detail.
