Description

Victorian London Fog is a full-bodied black tea scented with bergamot, sweet vanilla, and a touch of lavender. It takes its name from the Victorian custom of pouring steamed milk into Earl Grey, and we built the blend to live up to that cozy ritual.

The aroma leads with vanilla and soft floral notes, and the cup follows with citrusy bergamot underneath. It was the first winning recipe from our customer creation contest, chosen by our community from the final five of thousands of submissions, and it has stayed a favorite ever since.

A London Fog usually means Earl Grey with steamed milk, so when this recipe won our first blending contest, I wanted the vanilla and lavender to do the softening instead of the milk. We built it on a full-bodied black base so it still tastes like a proper cup of tea, with milk or without. Lemony Bergamot, Vanilla, and Lavender, no wonder people love it!

Four Decades of Tradition

In 1983, John Harney set out to make tea an everyday luxury, hand-blending his first teas in the basement of his country inn in Salisbury, Connecticut.
Three generations later, we still follow his one rule: only buy and blend teas that make us smile. Today we blend more than 300 of them from a home base in Millerton, New York, where the third generation is adding blends of its own.

The Blend You Voted For

The London Fog began in the Victorian era as a simple idea, Earl Grey softened with steamed milk. When we ran our first customer creation contest, thousands of blends came in, and this was the one our community chose from the final five. We start with a full-bodied black tea base, then scent it with bergamot for citrus lift, vanilla for sweetness, and lavender for a gentle floral note. The result is an Earl Grey grown cozier, the flavor of a London fog in a cup.

How to Enjoy It

Victorian London Fog is sweeter and more floral than a standard Earl Grey, and that is the whole point. Here is how we make it when we want it at its best.

Water

Start with fresh spring or filtered water. It's nearly everything in the cup, and even a tea this bold takes on whatever's in the tap.

Hot

With its black tea base, you'll want to use boiling water (212ºF). Steep 5 minutes so the vanilla and bergamot have room to come forward.

  • 1 sachet per 12 oz mug
  • 1 teabag per 8 oz cup
  • 1 teaspoon loose (2.5 g) per 8 oz cup

Iced

Brew it double strength, twice the tea for the same water, then pour straight over a tall glass of ice. The vanilla and bergamot stay expressive as the ice melts, so it never tastes watered down.

Is Victorian London Fog good with milk?
Yes. A London Fog is traditionally Earl Grey with steamed milk, and this blend was made for it. A splash of milk rounds out the vanilla and softens the bergamot.

How is it different from Earl Grey?
It starts from the same bergamot as Earl Grey, then adds sweet vanilla and a touch of lavender. That makes it softer, sweeter, and more floral than a classic Earl Grey.

How much caffeine is in Victorian London Fog?
It is a caffeinated black tea, so expect a moderate lift in line with our other black teas. For a lighter cup, shorten the steep time slightly.

How do I brew Victorian London Fog?
Use fresh boiling water at 212 degrees and steep for 5 minutes. That is one sachet or one teaspoon of loose leaf per cup.

Loose leaf or sachets?
Both are the same blend. Sachets are the easiest for a single cup with no measuring, and loose leaf gives you a little more control and value for a pot.

Is there a decaf or organic version?
Victorian London Fog is not currently offered in a decaf or organic version. If you would like the same bergamot character without the caffeine, our Decaf Earl Grey is a close cousin.

Can I make it iced?
