Description

Harney & Sons Paris is a fruity black tea blend, layered with caramel, vanilla, and black currant, with a hint of bergamot. Mike built it as a tribute to the Parisian tea shops and his French wife, Brigitte, he loves. Like the city itself, it is complex and charming.

It is round and a little sweet on its own, so it needs little or no sugar. It is just as good over ice as it is hot, which makes it easy to keep coming back to.

Details: Mike has spent many a fine day and a few nights enjoying the charms of Paris. In fact, his wife, Brigitte, is from Paris. So when he got the chance to return the favor, he created this lovely fruity blend. Like the city (and also his wife), it is very complex. The results are very popular!
Dry Leaves: This complex tea is a blend of three teas. The leaves are black, and natural flavors are added to create this spectacular tea.
Liquor: The liquor is medium to dark brown.
Aroma: This tea smells like Earl Grey, with black currant and vanilla aromas and a hint of caramel.
Flavors: Similar to the aroma, this tea is sweet like caramel and has a fruity flavor of black currants. You can also taste a hint of vanilla.
 Caffeine Level: Caffeinated
 Body: Medium-bodied
Brewing Time: 4 to 5 minutes

Brigitte is from Paris, and we have spent many fine days there together, so this blend is personal. I wanted something as complex as the city itself, fruity and round enough that it needs little or no sugar to be lovely.

Four Decades of Tradition

In 1983, John Harney set out to make tea an everyday luxury, hand-blending his first teas in the basement of his country inn in Salisbury, Connecticut.
Three generations later, we still follow his one rule: only buy and blend teas that make us smile. Today we blend more than 300 of them from a home base in Millerton, New York, where the third generation is adding blends of its own.

A Tribute to Paris

Paris is a Harney & Sons original, created by Mike as a tribute to Paris, a city he knows well. His wife, Brigitte, is from Paris, and the two of them have spent many days enjoying its charms and each other. Paris is the city of Light but also Love. He wanted a black tea that carried that same feeling, so he layered a fruity black base with caramel, vanilla, and black currant, then finished it with a hint of bergamot. Like the city that inspired it, it is complex, and it merits not just one visit, but many. And we know that you will love it!

How to Enjoy It

Paris is complex, layered the way a good afternoon in the city is. Here is how we make it when we want it at its best.

Water

Start with fresh spring or filtered water. It's nearly everything in the cup, and even a tea this bold takes on whatever's in the tap.

Hot

With its black tea base, you'll want to use boiling water (212ºF). Steep 5 minutes so the caramel and black currant have room to come forward.

  • 1 sachet per 12 oz mug
  • 1 teabag per 8 oz cup
  • 1 teaspoon loose (2.5 g) per 8 oz cup

Iced

Brew it double strength, twice the tea for the same water, then pour straight over a tall glass of ice. The caramel and black currant stay full as it dilutes instead of thinning out.

Common questions

What does Paris tea taste like, and what is in it?

Paris is a fruity black blend layered with caramel, vanilla, and black currant, finished with a hint of lemony bergamot. Mike Harney created it as an homage to the classic Parisian tea shops, and it tastes rich and dessert-like without being heavy.

Is Paris good with milk or sugar?

Paris drinks beautifully on its own and needs little or no sweetener, since the caramel and vanilla notes already read as sweet. If you like a creamier cup you can add a splash of milk, but many people enjoy it plain to keep the bergamot bright.

How much caffeine is in Paris?

As a black tea, Paris has about 40 to 60 mg of caffeine per cup, a moderate amount. If you would rather skip the caffeine, we also offer Decaf Paris and a caffeine-free Paris Herbal.

Is there a decaf or caffeine-free version of Paris?

Yes. Decaf Paris keeps the caramel, vanilla, and bergamot character without the caffeine, and Paris Herbal is a caffeine-free herbal take on the same flavor. Both are good choices for the evening or for anyone moderating caffeine.

Should I buy Paris in loose leaf, sachets, or teabags?

Paris comes in loose leaf, sachets, and wrapped teabags, so it comes down to your routine. Loose leaf gives you the fullest flavor and lets you adjust the strength, while sachets and wrapped teabags are the easy, tidy option for the office or travel.

How do I brew Paris?

Bring fresh water to a full boil at 212F and steep Paris for 5 minutes. That is enough time to draw out the caramel, vanilla, and black currant while keeping the bergamot lively. See the How to Enjoy section on this page for more detail.
